The effort was started for Colby Caravaggio, a beloved art teacher at Peter Noyes Elementary School in Sudbury, who was diagnosed with an aggressive form of pancreatic cancer in July 2023.
Soon after Caravaggio's devastating diagnosis, the school community began showing their deep love for the teacher, who has brought joy and shared his passion for pottery and creativity with young students at the school for 25 years.
This outpouring of support included homemade meals, gift cards, and heartfelt messages. However, the school community soon wanted a more collective way to show their support for Caravaggio and his family.
To do this, community member Jean Maguire began a GoFundMe fundraising page to collect donations to ease Caravaggio's financial stress from his treatment.
"Although Colby did not request this GoFundMe, we, as his family and friends, knew he could use the support right now, and we are happy that Colby and his family are open to and very grateful for our donations," Maguire wrote on the fundraiser page, continuing, "Your generous contributions will make a significant impact on Colby’s fight against pancreatic cancer and ease the financial stress and fears the family is facing."
The fundraiser soon proved to be a success, as it had collected almost $70,000 out of a $75,000 goal by Tuesday, Feb. 13.
The funds will all go to help Caravaggio, who is now awaiting placement in a clinical trial.
"As Colby always says, 'Look for the glimmers,' and we will continue to do so," Maguire wrote, adding, "Thank you for being a part of Colby’s journey. Your support means the world to him and to all of us who cherish the impact he has had on our lives."
